Theories

The Effects Debates

There are three voices that are involved in effects debate, they are...

People that have research to support is media has positive or negative effects on society

People that are subject to a study such as sonsumers of media, an example is children.

People that voice their opinions with no actual evidence to back up there claims. An example of this is someone saying that a video game can cause children to want to copy the actions in real life.

The Reception Theory
This theory is based on how people interprete different things. how they take in a form of media. Some people can take it differently, especially with music videos and films.

There are three ways to intake media, they are..

Preferred is the way that the director or producer wants it to be seen, it has its own meaning to them.

Negotitated is when the audience understands some of the directors veiws but also the codes of media.

Oppositional is when the audience rejects the directors codes and conventions completely.

The Hyperdermic Needle theory
This is when someone is completed obsessed and enthraled in a film that they want to pay their own part of it in really life. This is more likely to happen with a film or TV scene rather than a music video. An example of this is the shooting of 12 Amercicans of one of the first showings of Batman The Dark Knight. It is claimed that this theory has caused deaths before but has never been proven, as seen with Marilyn Manson. He was accused of getting young fans to cause homicide crimes, but there was nothing to prove that he had any wrong doing, it was just an accusation.

Blulmer and Kats
Blulmer ands Kats in when people look at people in the media rather than actual media stories. It is like looking and reading up on your favourite artist rather than looking at current products in the media. An example of this is Justin Bieber being arrested, his fans will be reading up on this..
