Artist Poster

This is the poster that was created using Photoshop to advertise Sidney Sanderson's new upcoming single. The poster was based a lot around the Never Say Never poster from our ideal artist Justin Bieber. The main photo for the poster was taken whilst we were out filming on location so the poster also directly relates to the music video that we have created for our song. We had a choice of various photographs and decided to go with this because our artist was looking directly at the audience and got them more involved in the poster.

This is the poster for Justin Bieber's Never Say Never that our poster was inspired by.

Individual evaluation

As I was working in a group, we divided the roles accordingly, the way we felt would work in everyone's advantage. I was the lead actor, editing manager and also co producer of the video. I felt that this role was best for me as I have had previous experience in front of the camera, plus I felt more comfortable than any of the others singing and acting at the same time.

I think that this was still a challenge for me personally as singing and acting together are not as easy as it looks, but I feel i performed professionally and well throughout.

I didn't have much time with the camera while filming as I left that too another member of my group that was in charge of camera work. Throughout the filming, I did input my ideas and make my thoughts known, but also knew when I had to take a step back and listen to others ideas.

As a group we where very nervous about the project, and in all honestly probably over though some aspects, especially while filming. We would some times film something that wasn't necessarily completely part of the concept of the song, and from their it would be a waste.

During editing, I was in charge with the assistance of my group, and slowly but surely, I was able to link all visuals with the adequate texts and make it looks as professional and accomplished as possible, without any sort of cost needed. We made use of what we had effectively.

If I had of been by myself in the project, I think I would have had less ideas than I did at my disposal as we as a group had many ideas and bounced off one another to come up withy outcomes, some success, some not success, but we got there in the end. If I had of been by myself, I think I would of possibly had more time to command my scene's and filming would have been a little bit easier in the sense that I would not have had to find time where all 4 of us as a group where free, I could have just chose when I wanted to film, but overall I did prefer working in a group.

I felt this project really helped me understand how much hard work goes into a music video and all
the production behind it, as well as experiencing being under the spotlight. I am proud of my group, and how we managed to split up responsibilities and tasks was excellent. As a team leader, I feel that we done a good job overall.

Video Feedback Group Update

As a group, we looked at the feedback we had been given and decided to re film a couple of scenes, along with an addition scene that will add to the start of the video.

We where told that we needed a female input into the video, this therefore giving the video a little bit more of a story and thread to follow, where as before we had no female input.

We will  be posting a remake within the next few days and will looking forward to everyone viewing it.

The Effects Debate

The Effects Debate has 3 different kind of people involved...

1. When people who have no statistical evidence vent their thoughts about a form of media that they deem unsafe with no evidence to back up their claims, such as politicians or celebrities. They say they feel 'young kids will go and copy what they say.'

2. People that do actually have evidence to show positive and negative effects from media products.

3. The people that are subjected to these media products, such as more often than not, children and teenagers.

The effects debate is a overview of..

The Reception Theory
The hypodermic Needle Theory
The Blumler and Katz Theory

The Reception Theory
There are 3 views in terms of the Theory.

Preferred is the way the director wants to see the media product, and hoping that the audience shares the same views.

Oppositional is when the audience completely go against the codes and conventions set by the director/producer.

Negotiated is when the audience agrees with some of the codes and conventions set by the director/producer.

The Reception theory could relate to a song such as 'How to save a life' by The Fray as it could be interpreted in different ways by different people.

Not always when watching a media text will some people agree with how the producer wants the viewer to interpret the text. An example of this is when Archie Mitchell was killed on Eastenders, and was meant to portray sadness, yet most people where glad that he had finally been killed because of the crimes he had previously committed.

The Hypodermic Needle Theory
This is described as when a person is viewing TV, media is being pushed into our brain, such like a syringe injecting it into us. It is stated in the theory that we are passive viewers, and are not completely aware of what we are taking in when viewing. The Mass media play a huge role in embedding information into our brains throughout advertising and that is why it is so effective as we don't know that we are consuming this information, yet subconsciously we are paying attention to it. An example of this is seeing an advert for a film once, and not taking any interest, but then seeing it again and think that you would like to see it.

The full extent of the theory is shown when someone can become completely immersed in a product and believe that they are a part of it. An example of this is when James Holmes killed 12 people and wounded 70 others at a theatre viewing of 'Batman The Dark Knight'. He claimed that he was meant to perform this attack, proving just how immersed in the film he was.

This is not the only cased involved with the theory, as Marilyn Manson and his record company where blamed for many deaths around America for the music he has released. A Homicide in an American school was blamed on his music, yet he has had no prior connection to the killers at all, just that they where fans of his music.

Blumler and Katz
Blumler and Katz, also know as the Gratification theory, specifies that we as an audience seek more out of media for our own pleasures and desires than what the actual texts offer. We watch it for our own pleasure and it doesn't particularly matter what the text portrays. We as an audience are passive or active, and our roles in media depends on us personally.

Also the theory suggests that it is up to us which media we take notice of at a specific time. An example of this is after a Girl having an argument with her boyfriend, going to watch a sad 'chick flick' movie.

Carol Vernallis Theory

Carol bases this theory on 4 main components which are editing, narrative, concept and movement and framing. From what she thinks, a music video is a response of a a narrative, claiming it is a representation of the lyrics. She also claims that sometimes videos are left unfinished, and this questions the narrative behind the story. Some examples of editing is jump cuts, extreme changes of pace and graphic matches.

The Fourth Wall is often used in many scenes, and most camera shots are taken from this side. It is interesting because a lot of work goes on here, but you will never see around this area during filming.

This is an example of the fourth wall on the set of Friends. As you will recognise this set very well, you will never see behind it. Nearly every shot from a scene filmed here will have used the fourth wall.

Carol also states that one of the most important important shots in a music video is the establishing shots. You can see them up to 4 times in a video. This is a shot from Katy Perry's 'All of me.'

Video Release

Our first draft is complete! We have finished editing and filming, and have released our debut video onto youtube. We have asked for audience feedback before confirming a final draft, but we are so far happy as a group with what we have produced, and will make any changes that are necessary in order to improve the video as a genuine media product. I have enjoyed this experience so far, and will look forward to hearing what fans and other audiences have to say about our Video.

Intertexuality

Intertexuality is recreating an original text in a new media.
An example of this is the Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'Californication'
This is a good example of intertexuality as it is showing a musicvideo inside a video game, therefore an original media text inside a new media setting. It is a really clever video and it really does engage the viewer. I is constantly changing from the game to band performance throughout. This has never been done before, so it is known as the original text.

Artist Poster

This is the poster that we have created to advertise Sidney Sanderson. The photoshoot was done during filming and we captured many different shots, but thought this was the most suitable one. This was created with links to Justin Bieber, as he is one of our areas of focus. As said above, we did take many shots but we thought this was the most appropriate one.

This is the Justin Bieber Single cover for 'Aslong as you love me'. As you can see we have went for a similar feel in comparison, but also wanted our own aspects into it. We wanted to obviously have a serious cover, as Bieber has, but yet have it creative enough so that it will interest the viewer.

Music and Me (Class Disscussion)

In class, we had a disscussion of favourite genres of music and personally favourite songs. Through research, I noticed that a lot of songs where from the past few years and not really many before them. I had the oldest selection of song in Aerosmith's 'I don't wanna miss a thing'. It was also deemed quite obviously that music selections had been influenced by certain life events and parental input at childhood. I said that my music tastes varied as I have ben influenced by my Father and 3 older brothers so it has grown to be a quite diverse selection.

Group Reflection

At the moment, we are in the mist of filming our video. We are really enjoying experiemnting with new ideas and new creations to mke our product as good as it can  be. We have been taking photos of our progress throughout to show how we have improved throughout our progress. We are about half way through filming and have set a date of the 20th of February to have finished filming and be onto improving and editing our final product.

Our Facebook and Twitter pages are up and running and are gaining more followers and friends everyday as we promote our artists. We also have interview with him on offer on the group blog.

I will be updating this blog as much as I can but currently the group blog and group work is my main priority until I am at a position where my group and I are completely happy with our progress.

Editing in Videos

Editing is really important in videos as is enables the video to flow and makes it more interesting for the viewer. It means that you can change from story to perform very quickly but keeps it from slowing down or dragging at all. It is important to use edits in every video as good editing can enhance how interesting and enthralling your video can be. Good uses of editing in vidoes...

  • She will be loved - Maroon 5

  • Aslong as you love me - Justin Bieber

  • Confident - Justin Bieber

Theories

The Effects Debates

There are three voices that are involved in effects debate, they are...

People that have research to support is media has positive or negative effects on society

People that are subject to a study such as sonsumers of media, an example is children.

People that voice their opinions with no actual evidence to back up there claims. An example of this is someone saying that a video game can cause children to want to copy the actions in real life.

The Reception Theory
This theory is based on how people interprete different things. how they take in a form of media. Some people can take it differently, especially with music videos and films.

There are three ways to intake media, they are..

Preferred is the way that the director or producer wants it to be seen, it has its own meaning to them.

Negotitated is when the audience understands some of the directors veiws but also the codes of media.

Oppositional is when the audience rejects the directors codes and conventions completely.

The Hyperdermic Needle theory
This is when someone is completed obsessed and enthraled in a film that they want to pay their own part of it in really life. This is more likely to happen with a film or TV scene rather than a music video. An example of this is the shooting of 12 Amercicans of one of the first showings of Batman The Dark Knight. It is claimed that this theory has caused deaths before but has never been proven, as seen with Marilyn Manson. He was accused of getting young fans to cause homicide crimes, but there was nothing to prove that he had any wrong doing, it was just an accusation.

Blulmer and Kats
Blulmer ands Kats in when people look at people in the media rather than actual media stories. It is like looking and reading up on your favourite artist rather than looking at current products in the media. An example of this is Justin Bieber being arrested, his fans will be reading up on this..

Update on group progress

Currently, we me and my group are in full flow of filming. We are about half way through.
We have set up a merchandise page and are also looking on finishing our album cover/poster within the next week. Progression is coming along nicely and we hope to have completed filming by 20th of February, then have our final product completed by the end of February.

We have also been looking closely at Justin Bieber's situation, as he is part of the artist base that we have been looking at, and looking at the positive and negative effects of this situation on our artist.
